Important things to know when deciding on hiring a Live Band or DJ for your Wedding Reception

Posted: Dec 24, 2009 |

]]>

What’s the best form of entertainment for your wedding reception, a Disc Jockey or a live band? Hands down it is going to be a live band! A live band lets your guests know this is a true special ocasion worthy of a live performance. A live band has far more energy and entertainment value than only having a Disk Jockey because the band members are putting on a show as well as performing live and the live get-up-and-go of the band often gets people dancing far more than a Deejay. Sadly, its not the joyful union of you and your fiance that your guests remember most but the entertainment of the reception. You will hear many more congratulates on the band you hired than you will compliments on what a splendid ceremony it was, and you will rarely hear compliments on what an unbelievable Disk Jockey that guy was. Entertainment is instrumental to a fabulous party.

Some proponents of DJs will say that live music has a small song list but this is a fallacy as most pro live bands have over 16 hours or more of music and can easily pick and choose the best songs based on crowd response to assure that the dance floor stays packed and the energy never fails. Also, bands act as a Disk Jockey on band breaks and this is a great time to have them play some of your favored tunes that might not be in their set list. Also, during breaks should be when you do all your wedding activities such as bouquet and garter toss, cutting the cake , and best man toasts. This keeps the party rolling while the band rests in between sets and the remainder of time left on break can be filled with the band DJing your favorite dance tunes. You can also have the best of both worlds with a live band DJing tunes on their breaks by having the band Disk Jockey special types of music for relations of particular ethnic groups that may be at the party such as Jewish, Latin, Greek, or whatever style of music your special ethnicity of guest chooses.

Live bands vary in how pro they are as much as they vary in styles that they play. Make sure you take a look at the band’s song list to see if it is ample and it should have a good assortment of music from all eras. A band that has been around for a long time will know which tunes work best at getting people on the dance floor in the wide-ranging age groups at wedding receptions and will know which tunes are loved across all age groups. An instance would be Lady Marmalade by Patti Labelle which is just as effective at getting teenagers out shaking it as it is getting 50 year olds on the dance floor. A good live performance will have all this information ahead of time and will wield it like the hand of Thor in keeping your reception hopping through the entire night. Also, most pro wedding bands will have a band leader that acts as Master of Ceremonies announcing the bride and groom, the wedding party, cutting of the cake and bouquet and garter toss. Check to make sure that the band has an emcee that will do this for you.

There is only one drawback of a great live band. The cream of the crop of variety bands will invariably be more high-priced than one man spinning tunes. Great variety bands can be anywhere from $1500 to $10,000 for the best variety bands and DJs can be anywhere from $300 to $2500. Most of the time, you usually get what you pay for. More expensive bands get a much higher price because of the fabulous live show they put on. They normally sound a lot better and have much more wow factor than more low-cost bands.

To sum up, a fabulous variety band will give you a much more successful reception than a Deejay by an amazing live performance and can also act as a DJ playing specific obscure tunes you may want that are not on the bands song list. The band leader will know the best songs to play and what time during the night to play them and can also act as Master of Ceremonies. If youve got the funds, the obvious selection here is a live band for your wedding reception.

How Do You Choose A Good Wedding Band Part 2

Posted: Apr 12, 2010 |

]]>

Following on from part 1, here are some more important questions to ask when you are considering hiring a live band for your big day.

How long do they take to set up their equipment? Most good function/wedding bands can set up in 30 to 40 minutes which is about the time it takes the venue to turn the room around after the wedding breakfast, ready for the evening. If they take much longer, you and your guests may be held in a side room while the band finishes setting up, and even worse, doing the dreaded sound check. Good bands can judge the acoustics of a venue as they set up and sound checks are often little more than rehearsals on your time!

How long are their sets and what kind of music will they provide during the breaks? Many bands only play for two 45 minute sets which leaves an awful lot of time to fill during a 4 or 5 hour evening reception. Good professional bands will play for at least 2 hours and should be able to do three 45 minute sets, which will then only leave a couple of intervals to fill. There is a big difference between a band just putting a random CD on and having a carefully thought out set of recorded music for either background or dancing as required. Again, good bands will have given this some thought and will have selections of light music for playing during a buffet or for settling down music before the band starts, and a properly thought out set of disco music for the later interval when you want the dancing to continue.

Can you request any particular music during the breaks, it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to request special songs played during the intervals and the band should also be able to learn at least one special song for your first dance together, if they don’t already know it. (It is probably a bit over the top to expect a band to learn more than a couple of songs especially for you if they are not going to get much use in the future).

Do they ask for a deposit and do they expect the balance paid in full before the day of the reception? This is not unreasonable and you will find that most of your suppliers will work this way. If a band is haphazzard about the way you pay them it is awkward for you as well as them. Do you really want the band leader following the best man around all night waiting his money – much better to get it out of the way a week or so prior to your big day?

Are you booking the band direct or through an agency and if through an agency, will you be able to speak to the band directly when you need to. This is very important as agencies often give the band very little info about the gigs they send them and don’t want you to have direct contact with the band in case you book them again later without going through the agency first. Don’t forget that agencies always add in the region of 25% to the band’s fee and the band will often charge a higher than normal fee to the agent. You lose a lot of money that way. Many bands will often be 30 – 40% cheaper if booked direct – and you get to speak to them. The only advantage of booking through an agent is that if the band lets you down at the last minute, the agent should find you a replacement, although of course you can always phone an agent yourself at the last minute. Most agencies have plenty of bands out of work at any time.

Backing Tracks - does the band play live or do they use sequences or backing tracks? If you hire a solo singer the chances are they will use backing tracks throughout. Whilst this may sound like the Count Basie Orchestra in full swing you are still only getting one person on the stage for your entertainment. A bit like a Karaoke machine really! Many bands also use sequences to give the impression of a larger band. This is fine as long they are upfront with you about it.

Demo tracks and video – probably the most important clue as to the suitability of a band for your event. Almost all bands now have some form of sound tracks or video available direct from their website. Take the time to listen to them. Some bands have clearly spent a lot of money on this side of their publicity although all that tells you is just that, they have spent a lot of money! Check out the video carefully. Is what you are hearing what you are seeing. Most videos done in studios are overdubbed with music later – in fact so are many live videos, but beware of the highly polished videos or sounds as this is probably not what you will hear on the night, or if it is, they will no doubt be using extra backing tracks when they perform, which can work fine but it does rather kill the spontaneity and means that the band can’t alter the set to suit the event. Do remember a live video with obviously live sound is probably not as polished but is a much more accurate picture of what you will get!

Miami Beach Wedding- The Beach Wedding of Your Dreams in Miami

If you do decide on a Miami beach wedding, keep it simple and sand friendly. Soft candlelight if in the evening, along with some natural beauty such as flowers, greenery, and shells is plenty. It is very easy to end up with over kill on the decorations at a Miami beach wedding. Food should be simple as well if served on the beach, as one strong wind could blow sand into it and ruin it all. Keep the cake and punch, and everything else for that matter, covered for as long as possible.

Secrets for Hiring a Top Utah Band or other Entertainer

Utah bands often include better musicians than various others across the nation and are among the most talented. Musicians that have been rehearsing from the time they were young children is a frequent characteristic found in Utah bands. The fact that Utah has more pianos per capita when compared to any other state shows the importance that individuals from Utah put on music.

Each city and town in Utah has an annual celebration in the summer. The many celebrations almost always involve live music provided by a local Utah band. Utah bands are seen in almost every neighborhood due to the fact that individuals in Utah attach importance to their annual celebrations and value live local music.

The variety of song you will discover comprises every genre you can imagine and every kind of musical instrument. An orchestra is a Utah band that plays classical music and includes violins, violas, cellos, and stringed basses. A smaller Utah band made up of four classical local musicians, called a “string quartet,” will frequently be established. And yet a smaller Utah band is comprised of only three orchestral musicians and is called a “string trio.” Utah weddings or various other formal celebrations will customarily involve a trio or string quartet and is typically the Utah band of choice.

However, a Utah band that has a violin doesn’t need to perform formal music. Celtic, bluegrass, and country musical styles often include fiddles, another term for violins. Utah boasts a host of award-winning groups in these ethnic genres. Besides a fiddle, country, bluegrass, and Celtic-style Utah bands will often contain a banjo, guitar, stand-up base, and a genuine Irish drum referred to as a Bodhran.

A Utah band including rhythm and lead guitars, electric bass, keyboard, and drums usually plays songs in the rock, R & B, or country genres. Utah bands that perform these kinds of songs are all the rage at festivals, corporate parties, wedding ceremonies, and county fairs. The attendees are regularly convinced to dance by a Utah band singing a favorite chart topper from the good old days, or a song from the Top 40 on on today’s radio.

Utah jazz festivals are plentiful, and a number of Utah bands that have trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone musicians perform the jazz circuit. Down Beat magazine picked a Utah band, the Crescent Super Band, as the best high school jazz band on the planet. This Utah band won just about all awards available for the taking and has toured worldwide. It is a regular occurrence for the first-rate young musicians from this band to form smaller Utah bands referred to as jazz combos. A popular jazz combo is the Utah JazzTet. A jazz combo will usually include three, four, or five local musicians, but will frequently involve a greater number. The jazz combo is a kind of Utah band which is in style at festivals and high-level company parties with sophisticated crowds.

In the music-appreciating state of Utah you will undoubtedly find a greater number of musical groups in the state capital of Salt Lake City than you will in the other areas. As a result of its cosmopolitan environment there are certainly more opportunities for Salt Lake City bands to perform, when compared to less crowded locations. Salt Lake City bands are given excited audiences at a host of venues like concert halls, universities, performing arts centers, clubs, hotels, and amphitheaters. Because of the scenic mountains, gracious individuals, excellent hotel service, and high-quality local musical groups, Salt Lake City is the place of a great number of company events. Salt lake bands are consistently hired to supply music for the event’s festivities by corporate event planners. Salt Lake bands rival or even exceed the quality of bands seen in New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, and it doesn’t take long for convention audiences to notice.

Musicians: How to find band members

Looking for band members is never an easy task. You may first
want to ask yourself what exactly you’re looking for – whether
it is to join an existing band or find individual members to
start your own band. Obviously, both have their differences and
this should be answered first before you start your grueling
search.

Join an existing band. This is a great way for
enthusiastic musicians to gain some playing experience right
away, although it is sometimes harder to find these kinds of
opportunities. These are established bands that are looking for
single or multiple members for various reasons (their guitarist
overdosed on cocaine, bass player got fired for drinking
problems, etc). This might go without saying, but make sure you
really do like the type of music a band plays before deciding to
join their group! There are many musicians I know that play in a
band where they don’t even like the music they play, all just to
“gain experience” to get their foot in the door and hopefully
move on to greener pastures. It can’t be stressed enough that if
you don’t like the music you play, you’re going to do a
half-assed job at it, so why bother?

Also, know your playing experience and limits. For example, if
you’ve only started playing guitar learning all Green Day songs
for a few months, don’t expect to join a thrash metal band that
requires you to do sweep-picking, fast arpeggios, or any other
insane guitar techniques. Make sure you choose a band where the
technicality of the music they play is comfortable with your own
skill level as a musician.

A huge advantage for joining an established band (maybe) is that
most of the back-end stuff is already taken care of. This
includes tasks such as finding an agent/manager to book your
gigs, song development, contracts with music labels, etc. All
you have to do is show up for rehearsals and play shows as
scheduled.

A good resource to start finding these bands in need is going to
your local rehearsal studios where most of them lurk. These are
places where any musician can pay for a room to rehearse. Best
of all, all the musicians you find there are often in your local
area. Check out the bulletin boards where frequent bands post up
classified ads that may go something like:

“Looking to join a band that rocks?! We are in need of a
guitar player with lots of experience! Our influences include:
Megadeth, In Flames, Black Sabbath, and many more! If
interested, please contact Todd at xxxxxxxxxx.”

Or even better yet, post up your own classified ad on the
bulletin board so bands can contact you instead. Local,
independent music stores often have a bulletin board for
classified ads as well. These are some of the best free ways to
find band members in your area.

Disadvantages of joining an existing band. First and
foremost, you have to learn all their songs usually in a limited
period of time. The band might have a show coming up and you
have to be able to play all their songs flawlessly
note-for-note. Needless to say, this might be stressful for some
musicians (except if their music is very straight forward and
easy with pure 3 note power chords).

Another disadvantage is often your own music creativity is
limited. Most bands prefer their original tunes to be played and
carried on without any radical change. For example, if you just
joined a band and replaced their old guitarist, the way the
former guitarist played a particular solo, is the way the band
wants it to be played by you. Often you must follow the same
note structure of a music piece composed by another musician.

Organizing your own band. This is where you try to find
individual musicians to start a new band, usually with similar
music skills and backgrounds. Thinking of starting a band is the
easy part, but the actual process of searching for the right
people is harder than most people think. There are tons of
musicians out there in the world but only a small percentage of
those you may be compatible with. In addition, ask yourself: are
you going to play in a band just for fun, or are you trying to
make a living out of it? This will influence where you are going
to start looking.

The internet is becoming a popular method for musicians to find
other musicians. If you search “looking for musicians” in
Google, you will easily find over 12,400,000 results – so how do
you find what you’re looking for? Many ads posted in classifieds
sections and on popular music forums will vaguely have
descriptions such as this:

“Guitar player looking to form a band.”

Well, that’s just great.

Try refining your search to keywords such as the area you are
in, what position you are looking for, etc. Example: “Looking
for bass players in Toronto”. The first search result is an ad
posted on www.craigslist.org, which by the way is an excellent
place to get started. Try to only focus your attention on
well-written ads that describe the musician, which includes how
much playing experience he/she has, the types of music they are
willing to play, and the intention of playing in a band. Or you
may also want to post your own ad in music community forums and
add a link to your audio/video samples that will likely interest
more candidates. Audio/video samples that show off your best
work are often the most influential factor of candidates
contacting you back.

Be consistent with this. Chances are you won’t find someone
right away on your first few posts, so try to refresh your ads
on a weekly basis (but don’t spam!).

The internet is a large resource but don’t just rely solely on
it. You may find you have better luck looking in local
magazine’s classifieds ads section where it’s more direct. Also,
because musicians have to pay to get their ads published in
magazines, it shows that they are more serious about organizing
a band.

Don’t limit yourself in a location. If you are serious
about starting a career as a musician, you don’t just search for
bands or members only in your local area. Living in smaller
towns and cities won’t give you very many options in choosing
the right band or member for you. Expand yourself to larger
urban cities where the potential to find band members is
greater.

Finding band members is like finding a good job. Know exactly
what you want before searching, always have a good portfolio
ready, and be consistent in your pursue. Goodluck!

Setting the Mood – Whether to Hire a Live Band or Dj for your Celebration

Music. It has the power to inspire the guests at your wedding reception to get out on the dance floor and boogie. It has the power to make your first dance as husband and wife emotional and unforgettable. It can be used to set a quiet, romantic mood during dinner and to create memorable moments on the dance floor that your guests will recall for years to come.

So choosing the person or people who create the soundtrack for one of the biggest moments in your life is an important decision. Music can make or break a party, and you need to find performers who understand that, whether they are DJs or bandleaders.

The first major decision you’re likely to make when planning the music for your reception is whether to choose a band or a DJ. The major distinction between the two begins with price. DJs can range anywhere from $300 to $1,200, whereas live bands can cost more than $2,500. But before you decide on price alone, consider the possibilities.

Live it up: When you’re throwing an elegant affair like a wedding reception, little else compares to the thrill and electricity that a live band can bring. The interactive nature of live entertainment can add a personal touch to your event.

A great vocalist can sing your favorite songs to you during your first dance as wife and husband. Live singers and musicians have a flexibility to be creative and personalize their performance for you. For example, bandleaders can research alternatives to more traditional wedding songs, or they might even explore a bride and groom’s relationship to determine what song would be most fitting for their first dance together. This flexibility and interactivity creates an aesthetic that your guests are sure to remember.

Size matter: Once you decide to hire a band you will decide what kind of band will be best for your event. With the plethora of performers out there, this can be a daunting task. You can narrow down your search a bit by determining the size of your reception. The number of guests, the size and shape of the reception area and the acoustical makeup of the room may help you decide whether you want a duo or a trio providing music or if you want an eight-piece band.

Keep in mind that even if your affair is small, with 60 guests, you don’t have to sacrifice great sound. Many three and four piece bands can enhance their sound by using digital sequencing. Sometimes power duos and trios will know how to create music that will fill up your reception hall, despite the smaller size. If you’re hosting a larger event, the size of your band can grow from the traditional, four-piece band to something larger like a 12-piece band or orchestra. It all depends upon your personal taste, your budget and the effect you want to create at your reception.

Searching for style: In addition to determining the size of the band, you’ll want to look for a band that is versatile enough to perform the songs you know will be hits at your reception. Consider what kind of a sound you’re looking for ‘ swing, jazz, classical, rock or a mix of everything ‘ and seek out bands that can perform in those musical genres. It’s best to stick with professional musicians who aim to have a great band ‘ not just a great wedding band. Professional bands will typically offer you a broader repertoire of songs than a band that moonlights on weekends at weddings.

Reach out for recommendations: Once you’ve decided what size and type of band will suit your reception, you’ll want to know which local bands come highly recommended. To find out, talk to vendors in the wedding industry in your area. Ask managers at respected hotels and reception halls, florists and other associated with the local wedding scene which bands they would recommend. If the several of the same names keep popping up, you’ll know where to start making calls.

Seeing is believing: After you have a few band names to pick from, it’s time to start making appointments to see bands that appeal to you in action. Whether it’s a rehearsal or a performance, being able to see the band you’re considering as it performs is one of the best ways to judge it. You will feel for how the band members interact with their audience and for how well the play which will help you when it comes time to make a decision.

If you can’t see the band in action, ask for a CD or a videotape of a performance, or better yet, arrange a personal meeting with your prospective bandleader. You’ll be able to better gauge the band’s talent and style.

For economy and convenience, you really can’t beat the effect that a polished DJ can bring to your wedding reception. While generally lower in cost than a live band, DJs offer you variety, versatility and many of the same qualities that a live band can.

Variety ‘ the spice of DJ life: One of the advantages of hiring a DJ is that you and your guests will have access to an extensive collection of music, ranging from wedding favorites that you hear al the time to the more obscure. Whereas a band may not know how to perform less popular tunes that might appeal to you or your guests, a DJ is sure to have a broad repertoire that will include lesser-known artists. This can make it easier to handle requests from your guests.

While you or your spouse-to-be may have eclectic musical tastes that car be accommodated more easily by a DJ, remember to not get too carried away choosing music that suits only your own tastes. Chance are your guests will be all ages, so their tastes for music will vary greatly. To keep a party going, most DJs will recommend a mix of music to keep guests involved in the festivities.

Original hits, original artists: In addition to their broad repertoires, DJs offer you the comfort of knowing that the music will be performed as it was originally recorded. You don’t have to worry about a band taking artistic license with one of your favorite songs. The music is heard exactly the way you and your guests remember it. A DJ needs to take a break, he or she can prepare a mix that will keep the songs going until the break is over.

Choose your own DJ: When you decide to hire a DJ, you will have to determine if the DJ’s style will suit you and your guests. DJs can come to your event equipped with extras like lighting, plasma screens with live action video of your guests, dancing and party favors. Additionally, DJs offer differing levels of interactivity with guests. Some serve as a sort of master of ceremonies during the wedding reception, and will do everything from announcing your bridal party to getting your guests involved in the dancing to handing out party favors like Hawaiian leis. Others take a more subtle approach, allowing the bride and groom to be the stars of the show.

Again, seeing is believing: As with a band, it’s best to see a DJ in action before agreeing to hire him or her. By observing how he or she runs a party, you will know what to expect when your big day arrives.

Born on 9th of January, 1967, South African vocalist and guitarist Dave Matthews was the initiator of Dave Matthews Band. Till the age of nine Dave had got command over piano and guitar. When his family migrated to Amsterdam , Dave became a part of local music community. After being amazed from the charms of professional music, Dave hatched up the idea of creating his own music band.

In 1991 Dave Matthews decided to put some of the song he had written on tape. He joined forces with Stefan Lessard, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley and Carter Beauford and for the first time the world saw the Dave Matthews Band.

Dave became the singer of the band, Carter took the drums while LeRoi Moore became the first saxophonist of the group. Stefan Lessard came on board to play the bass and Peter Griesar acquired the keyboard. Boyd Tinsley played violin for sometime but within a couple of years he abandoned the band, so did Peter Griesar .

The band rose to the music scenario by performing its first gig on 11 th May 1991, at a private rooftop party at Charlottesville . In no time words of the groups catching new sound spread over the region like a wildfire. Clubs began to crowd up, tours began to cover more terrain and their fan club was enhanced appreciably. The band conducted several tours across the country, concentrating on college campuses. Dave Matthews Band popularity was swelling gradually but they realized that for being paid with fame over the globe they needed a block buster hit. Their first album “Remember Two Things” did marvelous business and was the chart topper on College Music Charts. The young men were attracting the attention of influential persons. Meanwhile the band kept on touring the country, conducting several concerts. Dave Matthews Band lovers were increasing considerably.

Towards the fall of 1993, the band hit its first official world tour. During a year-lasting tour, Dave Matthews Band held successive concerts across Europe and their own country. The band was crawling towards the ultimate fame. It was not until the unleashing of their second album “Under the Table and Dreaming”, 1994, that their fame took a sudden high lift. The album sold over a million of copies and the band hoard billions of dollars worldwide. It has also been certified four times platinum by RIAA.

“Crash” was the next super hit album of Dave Matthews Band, released in 1996. It hit the top on Billboard 200 Music Charts and quickly went platinum. The band continued with a steady schedule of touring throughout 1997. North Americans were the next admirers of Dave Matthews Band, as the group had done exceptionally well there.

Despite the great efforts they made in music, Dave Matthews Band also commenced an attack, in concurrence with the Federal Government, on the bootlegger companies. Their targets were the stores which were selling semi-legal discs of live performances. Their exertions culminated in mass arresting of almost all the foreign bootlegging companies, in 1997. It marked the cessation of the entire underground industry.

Near the end of 1997, Dave Matthews Band spawned their first official, double-disc live album “Live at Red Rocks”. It was an out of the blue success, unveiling at number three on the charts. Hundreds of thousands of its copies were sold out in the first five months of its launching. The band’s sensational touring proved that Dave Matthews Band had developed from a grass root occurrence to one of the hottest bands in America .

Dave Matthews Band fans were electrified with the initiation of the third album of Dave Matthews Band, “Before these Crowded Streets”, 1998. This thrilling album is considered to be the most ambitious album of the band.

Dave Matthews Band was busy in extensive touring up till 2000. Matthews played electric guitar for the first time in his album “Everyday”. It was a super hit, like ever.

Matthews released his first solo album in 2003,”Some Devil”, which was more or less successful. Its single “The Gravedigger” won a Grammy Award in2004.

In early 2005, the band launched a website to keep their fans in touch with them. The website provides ample information about the progress reports on the next albums, video demos and sound tracks. The latest album of Dave Matthews Band hit the shelves in May 2005 and is still a big seller.
