Wedding bands are very specific type rings. They are in a league of their own, defined by purpose and symbolism far exceeding their ornamental function. For men, the wedding band is the most common piece of jewelry and for many – the only one. Wedding bands are worn by women and man all over the world day and night which is also making them the most frequent piece of jewelry. Because they are hardly off one`s finger, the wedding bands are expected to be comfortable, durable and hypoallergenic. Obviously they are also expected to fulfill one`s aesthetic standards, but while the first three requirements are compulsory, this one is highly subjective and allow wide diversity. The comfortable wear of men`s wedding band depends on many factors including the shape of one`s finger. There are however some common factors which I would like to point out:

In order to be comfortable the wedding band must be “comfort fit”. This means the internal wall of the band must be rounded and not flat. This ensures that the edges are softened and there is only small part of the inner surface of the band in contact with the finger giving it space to “breathe”. In order to have the inner wall rounded for comfort fit, the wedding band should be sufficiently thick and therefore heavier than the average flat wall one. This could be used as entry level indication of quality. The thicker the wedding band the more generous the comfort fit and respectively the higher the price. Cheap wedding bands focus on the use of minimum amount of precious metal and have no room for comfort fit. In order to make their wedding band lighter some manufacturers leave them with seriously sharp edges. Watch out for these when shopping on low budget. Other issues concerning the comfortable wear are related to specific wedding bands designs. Sharp outer edges, small sticking out detail and deep carved high ornaments are some of them. The rule of thumb is that the simple uncomplicated designs are the most comfortable ones. I am not implying that everybody must wear classic half round comfort fit band, but I also can`t deny that they are the most comfortable ones.

Looking at the durability factor one can`t help but notice that almost the same rules apply. To have wedding band that will not change its round shape even though most excessive banging we need thickness, a body of solid metal. The average thickness of low end 4mm.men`s wedding band is 1.5mm.
Comfort fit becomes possible at about 2mm. thickness, while good quality high end wedding band should be 2.3 – 2.7 mm. The type of metal is also very important durability factor. Here is good to differentiate the hardness of the metal form its abrasion resistance. Some hard metals will wear off much faster than some softer ones with higher abrasion resistance. 10k gold for example is probably the hardest gold alloy but it is wearing off at very rapid rate. The educated choice of white metal is definitely pointing to platinum and palladium, depending of personal preferences and budget. The two metals have identical look and mechanical properties with vast difference in specific weight and price. Palladium is 40% lighter than platinum and identical item cost +/- 4 times less making it the perfect wedding bands white media. Both metals are hypoallergenic and highly abrasion resistant. The gold is the best (and the only)metal for these who prefer yellow wedding band and my opinion is that traditional 4.5mm 18k yellow band with well defined dome is the one that suits best most men. Low carat gold alloys have diluted color and low precious metal content and while they are possible option I will not recommend them. White gold wedding bands have low score in every segment of assessment. Their natural color is not appealing; they need expensive maintenance (rhodium) they are wearing off fast and are more expensive than identical palladium band. The popular alternative metals like titanium, tungsten, zirconium etc. are not part of this study since they don’t belong to the precious metal group.

On the design side I will advise my fellow men to keep it simple, for quality and aesthetic balance speak much better than complicated detail. Of course this is my aesthetic point of view and I am far from trying to prove it is the right one. Design is a personal choice reflecting ones personality and taste and every design is right for the one who chooses it. In my experience as studio jeweler however I repeatedly came across men regretting their choice in design since it proved to be impractical. Most of them were men with active lifestyle, and/or professions requiring them to work with their hands. In many cases the unsuitable design was chosen by the fiance as part of wedding set. It is not a bad idea to forget about how nice the two matching bands look together in the box at the ceremony and consider the long years of wearing the bands that lies ahead. Impractical for most men are wedding bands with small detail, including engraving especially in gold since the ornaments will wear off in about one year and turn into deep scratches. Shadow lines and hollowed designs which will eventually gather grease and cause skin irritation. Complicated mix finishes (matt and polished) which will look good only for few days and very high (over 3mm) bands which will bruise the neighboring fingers. Whatever you wedding band choice, remember that the few classic men`s designs which survived the test of time have one thing in common – they were practical like most of the men themselves.

When getting started with resistance band training, it is tempting to go with just one band and see how it works out, and because resistance bands are so cheap that is definitely a viable option. However if you want to make resistance band training a complete part of your workout then you are going to want to invest in a complete resistance band set. “Investment” is actually the wrong word since resistance band sets are so inexpensive but I don’t have time to dig out the thesaurus and find a better word.

The Bodylastics Basic Tension Heavy Duty Resistance Bands Systemsystem comes with everything you will need to get a total body workout. The set offers 4 heavy duty rubber bands of varying resistance so you can get any tension level you want. The heavy duty foam handles felt great, but the ankle straps were a little rough. However I have very sensitive skin so if you are a normal person and you are wearing socks then the ankle bands should not give you any trouble.

One of the problems I have working with other resistance bands is when I want to use more than one of them at a time to create a tighter pull. Luckily the Bodylastics Basic Tension Heavy Duty Resistance Bands System took care of that problem by providing a carabiner hook system which allows you to attach all 4 bands to one set of handles or ankle straps. You are not left holding 4 handles at once, which is uncomfortable and makes you look kind of silly when using other resistance bands. The carabiner system allows you to hook or unhook the bands quickly so you can switch between workouts without wasting a lot of time and letting your heart rate drop.

Of course the most important part of any resistance band is how strong it is. Even the weakest person can wear out a resistance band with repeated use if it is not made properly. Band strength is another area where the Bodylastics system shines. Each band is continuous dipped rubber which means they are TOUGH. We had 2 people pulling them apart and could see none of the scarring or white streaks that appear in lower quality bands when they are over burdened. These bands should be far and away strong enough for anyone exercising at home, even on the P90X program.

Understanding Lap Band Surgery And Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery

An American company, INAMED Health, designed the BioEnterics Lap-Band Adjustable Gastric Banding System, which was introduced in Europe in 1993. Now the Swedish adjustable gastric band differs from the Lap-Band because it wasn’t designed for use with keyhole laparoscopic surgery. The lap band surgery or adjustable gastric band procedure is used in desperate situations and is performed with laparoscopic instruments, which generally means the surgery is minimally invasive with a short recovery time.

It’s usually contraindicated if the surgery or treatment represents an unreasonable risk to the patient. If one has a dependency on alcohol or drugs, they won’t be eligible for adjustable band surgery. The failure of dietary or weight-loss drug therapy for more than one year can make one eligible for the adjustable gastric band procedure.

Mentally retarded or emotionally unstable people won’t be considered for lap band surgery. The lap band surgery is usually not performed if one has an untreated glandular disease like hypothyroidism, where other measures may still be sought.

Removal of the adjustable gastric band would require a keyhole procedure and the stomach usually returns to its normal pre-banded state. Lap band or gastric band placement, unlike traditional malabsorptive weight loss surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, biliopancreatic and duodenal switch) does not cut or remove any part of the digestive system. The port membrane may be sutured in place.

The placement of the adjustable gastric band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach which holds approximately 50 ml; this pouch ‘fills’ with food quickly and the passage of food from the top to the bottom of the stomach is slowed. The surgeon uses a specialized needle is to avoid damage to the port membrane. Gastric dumping syndrome problems do not occur in lap band surgeries because no intestines are removed or re-routed.

The amount of weight lost following the months after surgery will depend on the individual and their personal circumstances, motivation, and mobility. The patient may be prescribed a diet of liquids only, followed by soft foods and then solid foods for a varied length of time; each surgeon and manufacturer will vary. During pregnancy, deflation should be considered if morning sickness is experienced.

Following surgery, adjustments, which are also called “fills”, may be performed using a fluoroscope so the radiologist may assess the placement of the band, the port and the tubing which runs between the port and the band. Weight regain can happen with any surgical weight loss procedure including the more radical procedures that initially result in rapid weight loss.

Erosion can occur where the band may wear a small area on the outside of the stomach which can lead to migration of the band to the inside of the stomach. Occasionally, the narrow passage into the lower part of the stomach may become blocked by a large portion of unchewed food.

Some mechanical malfunctions that can occur post-surgery are port leakage, cracking of the kink-resistant tubing or disruption of the tubing connection from the port to the band, port site pain and port displacement. Other complications of gastric band surgery include: ulceration and irritated stomach tissue.

Lap band and gastric banding as compared to other weight loss surgeries have shown a lower mortality rate, the stomach returns to normal if the band is removed, there is no cutting or stapling of the stomach, the band is adjustable without additional surgery and there are no malabsorption issues because no intestines are bypassed and there are fewer life threatening complications. Many factors can affect the total cost of your surgery, including the gastric surgeon you choose, where you choose to have the surgery performed, and what fees are included or not included in the price. Make sure if you’re traveling away from home for surgery consider the travel time and related travel expenses for both the surgery and follow-up appointments.

Lap Band Surgery – What To Know Before You Commit

When you choose to undergo any weight loss surgery it’s important to know that you’ve exhausted all your other options first, because it isn’t only an important medical decision but a significant financial decision as well. And if your lap band surgeon approves you for lap band surgery after having an extensive consultation, you’ll be required to undergo pre-op exams and lab tests before you can be medically cleared for surgery. The LAP-BAND System received its approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for use in the United States in June of 2001.

Having inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract like ulcers, esophagitis or Crohn’s disease does not make a person a good candidate for lap band surgery. The lap band surgery is usually not performed if someone has an untreated glandular disease such as hypothyroidism, where other measures may still be undertaken. A possible allergic reaction to materials in the band or for anyone who has exhibited pain intolerance to medically implanted devices are contraindications for lap band surgery.

People who are eligible for lap band surgery are between the ages of 18 and 55 years, although there are bariatric doctors who will work outside of these ages, some as young as 12 years old. And mentally disabled or emotionally unstable people cannot be considered for lap band surgery.

How it works – the band is inflated and adjusted by way of a small access port placed just beneath the skin subcutaneously, then radiopaque isotonic solution or saline solution is introduced into the band through the port. The adjustable gastric band or Lap Band is an inflatable, silicone, prosthetic device that is placed around the upper portion of the stomach and using keyhole laparoscopic surgery. And the port membrane may be sutured in place.

The placement of the adjustable gastric band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach which holds about 50 ml. The pouch fills with food quickly and the passage of food from the top to the bottom of the stomach is slowed down. Gastric dumping syndrome problems don’t occur in lap band surgeries because none of the intestines are removed or re-routed. When the upper part of the stomach believes it is full the message is sent to the brain that the stomach is full. This sensation helps the person eat smaller portions and thus lose weight over time.

The initial weight loss in gastric banding is slower than with Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery but the statistics indicate that over a five-year period the weight loss outcome is very similar. The World Health Organization recommendation for monthly weight loss is about 1.1 to 2.2 pounds a week. An average gastric-banded patient may lose this amount of weight.

Following the surgery, adjustments, which are also called ‘fill’s may be performed using a fluoroscope so the radiologist can assess the placement of the band, the port and the tubing, which runs between the port and the band. Some patients may find that before their first fill they’re still able to eat fairly large portions of food. And also regarding ‘fill’s, some weight loss doctors are more aggressive than others, but most appear to require a two to four week wait between the ‘fill’s.

Slippage can happen. Slippage is an unusual occurrence where the lower part of the stomach prolapses over the band and cause an obstruction. Some of the mechanical malfunctions that can occur after surgery are leakage from the port, cracking of the kink-resistant tubing or a disruption of the tubing connection from the port to the band, port site pain and port displacement.

Some of the complications of adjustable gastric band post-surgery are nausea, vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux, stoma obstruction, constipation, dysphagia, diarrhea, and abnormal stools.
